With the popular rise of geek culture, there have been plenty of folks out there who have chosen to ink themselves with their favorite characters or series. With this month’s blog, we’ve decided to collect some of the best of these geeky tattoos. Who knows? Maybe it’ll inspire your next one!
Super Mario 3
Here, we have a full sleeve themed after the Nintendo Entertainment System’s classic Super Mario 3. In it, we can clearly see all of the most iconic characters and images featured, such as a Super Star, Bullet Bill, Boo, Goomba, Toad, a Green Shell, and of course our hero, Mario, flying in his Tanooki Suit. For the person who looks fondly on the NES days, there’s little more that could make this scene complete.
Although he’s been criminally absent from the X-Men live-action film series, fans of the animated television series and the comic books will recognize Gambit in this arm piece. Gambit is a mutant with the ability to manipulate pure kinetic energy to his will. He’s also a fairly skilled card player. In this tattoo, we see a watercolor version of the character charging a playing card with energy just before he would throw it.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Door
One of the most memorable scenes from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, has to be when the fellowship reaches the Doors of Durin, just before entering the mines of Moria. The crew gets momentarily stumped here, as the door is captioned with a riddle, “The Doors of Durin, Lord of Moria. Speak, friend, and enter. I, Narvi, made them. Celebrimbor of Hollin drew these signs.” We don’t know how to say friend in Elvish, but we know how to say beautiful in English!
Spirited Away Susuwatari
Fans of Studio Ghibli are likely familiar with either the anime films My Neighbor Totoro or Spirited Away. In this tattoo, we see the Susuwatari or ‘wandering soot,’ which were originally designed by one of Studio Ghibli’s greatest creative minds, Hayao Miyazaki. These tennis ball sized beings usually just hover around the ground, but can sprout limbs at will. In Spirited Away, character Lin throws a handful of candies for the Susuwatari, much to their surprise and delight.
The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker is one of the most lauded video games in the Zelda series. Because of that, it’s created some of the most hardcore fans. Take a look at this stained-glass window of the game’s main protagonists, Zelda and Link. A lot of work went into this back tattoo and so did a lot of love.
There are of course so many more tattoos out there that are chock-full of geek love. These are only a few of the best ones we could find around the net. What’s your idea for a great geeky tat?
